Seasonally and yearly, we go through different styles. From indie chic, to bohemian, to rocker chic and beyond, fashion is always changing. One style that always remains relevant to the times, however, is preppy womens clothes! It’s not difficult to see why preppy womens clothes are in fashion still to this day. If you look at fashion even as far back as the early twenties, it’s simple to see the way every generation has affected the modern day fashion that is preppy womens clothes!
1920’s
If you take a look at the styles of the early 1920’s, you can see similarities between common preppy womens clothes of the modern day! Although oftentimes what first comes to mind when considering the 20’s is the flapper fashion, there are so many other looks less common in our 2000’s pop culture- that being preppy womens clothes. This was the clean-cut style referred to in the more period accurate films occasionally made in the modern day (not so much the whimsical 20’s style of Gatsby, for example). Take actor Robert Montgomary as a male exhibit of fashion, for example, with his usually well-pressed and tailored suit. As for preppy womens clothes in the era, I always liken the tops of the common flapper dress with the sleeveless elegance to modern prep clothing.
1940’s
The fashion of the 1940’s is extremely, obviously relevant to the modern day preppy women’s clothes. The super cute plaid pattern we see today in so many prep fashions really seemed to blossom in the 1940’s- here is where we began to see the great prints being utilized that would later blossom into the fun prints Melly M. is so well known for! We saw the polkadots, leopard print, checkers and plaid (not to mention stripes and floral!) really blossom to be used in a unique and fun way. Also, I can’t fail to mention how the pearl was used ever so often in the 40’s, which were and still are a great addition to any article of preppy womens clothes! They certainly are a timeless classic now, and remain a wonderful piece to revisit with your modern day outfits. Gorgeous, simplistic, and wonderful- great with our Greenwhich dress in any pattern, as it has the perfect neckline for a string of pearlescent pearls!
1950’s
Here’s where things get deliciously preppy! In the 1950’s, Grease-like fashion most likely comes to mind… the greasers, the pink ladies, and of course Sandy. We all remember the battle between the preppy and the greasers! Even more so than the 40’s, this was the height of the preppy womens clothes era! The adorable button up polos, with the absolutely perfect sweaters to drape around the shoulders and fit ever-so-perfectly under the collar. Neat and clean, as every preppy womens outfit aspires to be. The argyle pattern was quite in at this time as well, although some of us may attribute its origins to a Duke of 1900’s Britain who decided it made an excellent golfing pattern, making it again popular to this day in preppy womens clothes. We here at Melly M. by the way have reinvented that popular preppy womens clothing pattern in the form of our glorious Stella Royal in both light pink and a navy blue.
Stay with the rolling tides of fashion- preppy womens clothes are always in!
